The president, Mrs. Brown, and her husband John first visited the Malindi region on the coast of Kenya in 2001 and fell in love with the area. They bought a house there and, with time, became privvy to the conditions of the local children. Often, chores such as carrying wood, looking after siblings, and work takes precedence to attending school. Their homes are small shacks with no modern amenities. The price of a mandatory school uniform is enough to keep a child from school, and, even if the child can attend, there is no electricity at home to study by. The result of these revelations was the Milele Children Foundation.

Milele Children works with various local schools in order to support community development. One is Kingsway Junior School, which was started by a Kenyan couple in 1999. They began with 5 students. The school now has about 370 day and boarding students combined. Their students consistently rank in the top percentage at national exams.

The Board consists of Britt A. Brown, her son Lawrence Pearlman-a pilot with an MBA-who has worked with the World Food Program, and her daughter Anouschka Pearlman (BA in Political Science/MA in Natural Resource Management) . Last but not least, the Board is fortunate to have an honorary family member, Mela Lew, Attorney-at-law, on board. Everyone offers their time, skills and expertise as unpaid volunteers. All donations are used for the childrens’ boarding school fees, uniforms and supplies.
